Saturday, October 30, John F. Wiley Stadium hosted a football game, but the football team was not on the field. Instead, it was women across campus competing in the Powderpuff football game. The game was planned to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
A minimum donation of $2 was encouraged for entry. Raffle tickets were also sold 2 for a dollar to raise support.
The teams also wore pink to raise awareness for breast cancer. One team was solid pink and the other was tie-dye.
The game was for fun but that didn’t mean the atmosphere wasn’t competitive.
“It was really intense,” senior student Emily Schafer said. “A lot of people are really competitive on the field.”
The game was tied 12-12 after regulation. An overtime period did not change that.
Senior student and coach for the tie-dye team Jacob Nicholas gave nothing but respect to the players.
“I loved the effort from the ladies,” Nicholas said. “I have a lot of respect for them for banding together and having the resolve they did.”
Although the competitive side was showing, the women also made sure to have fun.
“I’m really excited I got to do this,” freshman student Megan Barry said.
“Both teams played their hardest and we were really evenly matched and the final score reflected that,” Schafer said. “I think it couldn’t have ended better.”
