Return of intramurals

Intramural sports are officially back after a nearly two year hiatus.

The Student Senate, working with the Student Activity Board and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, have brought back intramural sports for the spring semester. This is the first time intramurals have been held at Waynesburg University since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Ethan Lown, chair of campus affairs in the Student Senate, intramural sports aren’t fully back due to a shortage in staffing.

Lown said in an email that they “won’t be completely reinstated until next year.”

According to Lown, the SAB and SAAC are taking care of two one-day tournaments for this semester, one for volleyball and the other for basketball.

The volleyball tournament, hosted by the SAB, was held Saturday, March 12 in the old gymnasium of the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. The tournament saw several teams take the court and spectators take to the bleachers.

“I’m having so much fun,” Hannah Fitzsimmons, a student who participated in the volleyball tournament said. “I put [my team] together this morning, so we’re just having our best time out there and having fun.”

Student Senate president Luke Diel wrote in an email detailing that the SAAC will be hosting the basketball tournament later this semester.

“SAAC has not listed a date yet for the basketball tournament, but [it] will be expected in late March or early April,” Diel said.

Diel also said the date for the tournament will be announced soon as well with a form that will be sent out to students. The form will also be available on the myConnect page shortly after.
