Volleyball team takes home two wins in back-to-back

The Waynesburg University volleyball team defeated both Pitt Greensburg and Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday September 9th.

Jackets defeated Pitt Greensburg 3-1 and then Penn State Greater Allegheny 3-0.

Yellow Jackets were heading into the week coming off a win against Penn State Shenango, Senior Trysten Smith said how the team was feeling heading into this double-header.

“Knowing what to expect… it was going to be a longer day” Smith said. “Going in, if we just played how we could, we could compete… going into a good mindset.”

Confidence radiated from this team, clearly going into the game, and they did not disappoint.

In the first match against Pittsburg University of Greensburg, the Yellow Jackets won the first two sets of the match, but let one slip to the Bobcats, leading to a 2-1 lead.

Late in the fourth set, the Panthers had a rally of points, catching up to the leading Yellow Jackets, 23-20 points.

Coach Emily Grossman, of the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets called a timeout.

“It helped us come back,” senior Hannah Fitzsimmons said. “We knew we needed just a little break… we knew that we need to get it together and get the ball back and we’d be fine,” freshman Ciara Williams said.

Waynesburg would get those final two points for Waynesburg in under 30 seconds, adding another victory in the win column and moving on to play Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Waynesburg Yellow Jackets were undefeated against Penn State Greater Allegheny going into this match.

This is the Yellow Jackets and Bearcats third meeting since 2021, with the Yellow Jackets losing in that match.

This small rivalry gives some energy to the Yellow Jackets as they shut out the Bearcats, 3-0 and keep the undefeated streak alive against greater Allegheny.

On Tuesday, Waynesburg Yellow Jackets will host La Roche at Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse.

“La Roche just swept Saint Vincent, so they are coming off some good momentum,” junior Jordan Stein said. “If we play our type of game, we’ll be pretty good, playing the volleyball we know how to play” freshman Carissa Krall said.
