Ethan Spozarski - The Yellow Jacket From Thursday April 9 to Saturday April 11, six different teams and eleven different matches, meets and games happened for Waynesburg sports. This provided a multitude of different accolades and wins for Waynesburg athletics.
Women’s Golf:
The team only competed against one other school at the Bison Spring Invitational, however others competed as individuals. For Waynesburg, it was the freshmen duo of Avery Davis and Ally Wolling who led the way with a score of 101.
Davis said the success on the links is thanks to what is happening off it.
“This new group of freshmen women golfers have been a great impact,” Davis said. “Everyone gets along, loves to golf together, and has fun on the van rides. For me, the girls on the team have become good friends of mine.”
The women’s golf team went back out to the links on Saturday, April 11 to compete in the Westminster Spring Invitational. The team now continues its season at the Peter C Rossin Memorial Invitational in Washington, PA. Tee time is at 11:00 a.m.
Men’s Golf:
On the men’s side of golf, the team continued to find success like earlier in the season. As a team they placed third of seven teams in the Bison Spring Invitational, but it was the senior Matthew Karpeal with a final score of four strokes over 75 to take the individual title.
Karpeal is now the first Waynesburg golfer to claim an individual title since 2024.
“The weather has definitely played a part in this Spring Season. We played on Monday and it was hailing, but yesterday it was 70s and sunny. Oglebay definitely has a tough layout with all of the hills within the course,” Karpeal said. “The rough was very high and the greens were firm and fast which made hitting fairways a priority. Overall, it has been good to get these first few rounds in and prepare for the conference in 2 weeks.”
Sophomore Alan Tarolli found his way near the top of the leaderboards as he tied for fourth place with a score of 79.
The men’s golf team now sets their sights for their next match on Monday April 13 at the Peter C. Rossin Memorial Invitational.
Baseball:
The Yellow Jackets baseball team traveled north to face off against Presidents’ Athletic Conference opponent Grove City. Waynesburg was outscored in the doubleheader 32-13.
Game one finished with a final score of 18-3 through seven innings. Senior Noah Gabriel and freshman Jose Lopez Jr. each had an RBI.
Game two ended with a score of 14-10. The Yellow Jackets tallied eight runs in the third and fourth innings and sophomore Eli Boring led the way with 3 RBI. Senior Hunter Hamilton and freshman Brayden Krebs each had 2 RBI in the game as well.
The baseball team went on to split the doubleheader versus St. Vincent on Saturday April 11. The Bearcats defeated the Yellow Jackets 7-2 in game one, while Waynesburg beat St. Vincent 15-5 in just seven innings.
Waynesburg walked away from the weekend 11-19 overall and 2-10 in PAC competition. Their next game is this upcoming Tuesday, April 14 at home against Westminster. FIrst pitch for the doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
Softball:
The Yellow Jackets were to win three of their last four games against Bethany and Chatham.
Waynesburg hosted Bethany and split that doubleheader losing game one, 2-1 while rallying back and defeating the Bison 9-1 in six innings.
Transfer and starting shortstop Jamie Kelly said this team is very capable of sweeping other PAC schools.
“Getting at least a win against a good team was crucial for the playoffs. Our team is more than capable of winning against any team in the PAC,” Kelly said. “Our biggest problem right now is splitting and not sweeping. So, for these next games we need to give 100% effort, especially offensively, and start sweeping PAC games.”
The Yellow Jackets then traveled on the road to Munhall, PA to play the Chatham Cougars winning both games with a combined score of 18-3.
Waynesburg won game one in decisive fashion 12-1 in just five innings. All 12 runs were scored in the first three innings and all starters recorded at least 1 run.
The Yellow Jackets then won game two 6-3, with sophomore Meysa Heitmann and Kelly leading the way with 2 RBI each.
Men’s & Women’s Tennis:
Both tennis teams hosted and competed on April 9 against Mt. Aloysius with both teams coming away with a 5-2 win.
Sophomore Julia Umshares said that the growth for the women’s team stems from their growth on and off the court.
“A big part of our success this season has been how much closer we’ve grown as a team. We’ve really focused on supporting one another, both on and off the court, and that has made a huge difference in our confidence and overall performance,” Umshares said. “Everyone is constantly encouraging each other, pushing each other to improve, and celebrating each other’s successes, which has created such a positive and motivated team environment.”
The men’s team faced off against Franciscan the following Friday April 10. Men’s tennis dropped that contest 5-2 against the Barons.
The next time men’s tennis steps onto the court will be Tuesday April 14 in New Wilmington, PA when they face off against Westminster. The match begins at 12 p.m.
