Wiley Stadium flooded but able to finish the season for spring games and practices

Waynesburg, PA – Since the beginning of April, rain storms have made their presence well-known to Waynesburg and have been a big part of all the spring sports rescheduling.

One day, it rained so badly that the field at Wiley Stadium was flooded with water.

“The creek behind the stadium overflowed onto the turf,” Director of Athletics Tim Fusina wrote. “No damage was done, but we needed to disinfect the surface as to not endanger the health or safety of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff.”

The main sports that have suffered the most with practices and games are Waynesburg’s lacrosse, football and soccer teams.

Until April 13, Waynesburg sports at Wiley Stadium were put on hold due to weather implications. Waynesburg Lacrosse was scheduled to host five home games in April, but due to the weather, the team could host only two games.

Not only did this affect the team’s home games experience, but it also affected the student-athlete’s class schedules.

“As for the other things we have had to endure is just the changes to the team’s schedule,” lacrosse Head Coach Stephanie London wrote. “With the field flooding, the team had to adjust their schedules, from school, to work, practice and other obligations. It has caused them to miss time in class, which is a delicate situation as we don’t want their grades to suffer due to their athletic schedules, but in a situation such as the field flooding, the schedule changes were out of our control.”

Wiley Stadium is now playable, and teams are taking advantage of final games and available practice time before the semester ends.

“The team is so excited to return to Wiley for practices and games,” London wrote. “We will be able to show that our team are hard workers and fight beginning to end no matter the score or what our record says.”

You can catch lacrosse’s last home game and senior day on Wednesday, April 24, against Allegheny. The match starts at 6 p.m.
