Women’s basketball continue undefeated streak

Waynesburg University women’s basketball faced tough competition Monday night against Wooster, as the team held on strong for its fourth straight win of the campaign.

With a final score of 59-55, the Jackets not only picked up their fourth straight victory, but their sixth dating back to the final two games of last year.

“It was tough and gritty,” said head coach Sam Jones. “But these are the wins we needed heading into conference play. It only gets tougher from here on out.”

Wooster came into the Rudy Marisa fieldhouse off of a two game win streak and the team was aiming to take down Waynesburg’s momentum.

Last season, Waynesburg fell to Wooster 68-55, and had an eye on not affording history the right to repeat itself.

Volleyball and basketball athlete Madison Dayton ended the night as the team’s leader in points for this contest with 18. Kara McFadden trailed right behind with 15.

Dayton was one rebound shy of a double double, with her statline ending with 18 points, nine rebounds and going 75% in FG percentage.

The first quarter did not go Waynesburg’s way, trailing behind 17-10 for the first time this season in the first quarter.

This rough start ignited the team to only allow five points in the second quarter, while scoring 17 of its own taking the lead going into the half 27-22.

That second quarter performance alone would keep Waynesburg out of danger for the remainder of the game, though it stayed close and low scoring throughout.

Waynesburg would not attempt a single free throw in the first half, but would end the night completing five out of six attempts late in the game.

As Waynesburg enters Presidents’ Athletic Conference play, the team is second in the conference behind Bethany, who do have a conference win early into this season against Thiel.

Waynesburg currently ranks third in offense and third in defense in the PAC, scoring the second most points while allowing only 64.5 points per game.

Kalista Friday is third in the PAC in scoring this season while McFadden sits at eighth, giving Waynesburg two of the conference’s top 10 scorers early on this year.

Julz Mohrbacher is first in the PAC in rebounding with 46 in total.

Waynesburg will begin PAC play on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Grove City. Grove City is 1-2 on the year, winning its most recent matchup.

Last season, Grove City would sweep the series, defeating Waynesburg in both games. The last time Waynesburg women’s basketball defeated Grove City was Nov. 29, of 2017 at home 57-47.
