After an impressive 4-0 start to the season, Waynesburg women’s basketball fell short of its fifth straight victory last night against Grove City.
“Not gonna win them all,” said head coach Sam Jones. “This is one we felt we needed. But we play them twice a year, we’ll get our next shot at home.”
This loss now increases Grove City’s win streak over Waynesburg to 14 straight, as Waynesburg has not beaten Grove City since 2017.
The contest was hard fought all the way up to the fourth quarter, Waynesburg managing to keep the game close at hand with a tied first quarter 17-17.
Grove City would then take a four point lead heading into the half 32-28. This lead would be uncommon for Waynesburg, as this was the first game all season that the team had trailed at half.
The deficit would give Waynesburg an edge in the third quarter, as the team would outscore Grove City 18-17 to cut the lead down to three.
As the fourth quarter began, momentum shifted back into Grove City’s hands as they would run away with the game recording a 22-14 box score in the fourth. This quarter would seal the deal for Grove City, picking up its second win on the season with an eleven point win over the then undefeated Yellow Jackets.
Despite the loss, Waynesburg’s Kara McFadden played quite well in this game, leading the team with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists whilst shooting 5 for 11 from outside the three point arch.
“It’s a team game,” said McFadden. “We all want to play well, not just one person. We’ll shake this one off and move on to Geneva.”
On Saturday, Nov. 23, Waynesburg heads on the road again to take on the Geneva Golden Tornadoes.
Geneva came into this season ranked seventh in the President’s Athletic Conference coaches poll. As the season currently stands, they are ranked seventh in the PAC behind Waynesburg with a 3-2 record.
Waynesburg will be Geneva’s first PAC opponent this year this Saturday at 1 p.m.
