On Wednesday night, the Waynesburg University Girls Soccer team defeated La Roche University by a final score of 8-1.

Freshman Julz Mohrbacher and Sophomore Reagan Mittendorf both had 2 goals. Freshmen Kylie Criddle and Emily Beck had a goal each along with Sophomore Riley Corradi and Senior Kate James.

With this win, Waynesburg starts the season with an early 2-1 record.

Mohrbacher in this three game span has scored six goals which not only leads Waynesburg, but also leads the entire PAC. Mohrbacher was also named PAC Newcomer of the Week along with being named the Waynesburg Female Athlete of the Week.

“It’s kind of crazy… that was kind of the hope I had coming in,”  Mohrbacher said. “But for it to just automatically happen and to see that happen and us starting out with two wins, we had a tough first game and for us to come off with two wins is kind of crazy.” 

Mohrbacher continued to talk about her emotions of the hot start for Waynesburg. 

“Definitely a really good feeling to see how we progress even as a group through the preseason,” Mohrbacher said.  “When we came in this year, we saw that half of the team were freshmen, so to see us grow and it translates on the field and winning games is really cool.”

The night was also special for Beck as well. She scored her first collegiate goal in just her third appearance.

“I saw the chance and I took it,” Beck said. “I want to show that I can play and be out there on the college level.” 

Not only is Beck adjusting from High School to College soccer, she has also transitioned to a new position.

“I played Goalie in high school, started all four years and then I came here as a striker,” Beck said.

Waynesburg travels to Pittsburgh next week. They will take on Pitt Greensburg at Highmark Stadium, the home of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

“I have played there before… I got to play there my freshman and sophomore year of high school and it is great to be in the city, knowing that professionals have played there, and honestly it is fantastic.”

The Lady Yellowjackets will take on the Pitt Greensburg Bobcats next Tuesday at Noon.  La Roche takes on the Westminster Titans on Friday at 8:00 PM.
