WU hosts annual fall service fair

Waynesburg University’s first service fair of the year was held in Johnson Commons on Thursday, Sept. 5, in order for students to reach out and find service opportunities in the community. Organizations from all around the Waynesburg and Pittsburgh area set up tables from 11 am to 1 pm to speak with those who were interested.

Adrienne Tharp, Waynesburg University’s assistant dean of student development, spoke on the importance of the fair and getting students to reach out.

“The service fair is held each semester for students to have an opportunity to connect with local community organizations and for those organizations to connect with our students,” Tharp said. “We’ve been holding this event for well over 10 years.”

For some students, service is a requirement for programs such as Bonner Scholars. For others, it is simply an feasible way to get out into the community.

“We hope that students will make a connection with a community organization,” Tharp said. “A lot of SLR [Service Learning] students attend the event in hopes of finding a placement for the semester. But some students come just to make a connection to look for a new opportunity. I also hope students have fun and take advantage of the opportunity to network with some of our service sites, students and staff.”

The organization 2nd Sam 9 was one of the many organizations talking to students. They lead activities such as life skills training, music and crafts, bible lessons,  prayers and social time for adults with disabilities right in Waynesburg. Board member Carol Young discussed the benefits of the organization.

“Our program has been open for 12 years and is a faith based, non profit organization for adults with disabilities,” Young said. “Three days a week, from 10-2 , students are welcome to come and have some fun with us. They love to be with college students and young people so we’re hoping to get some positive responses today.”

As a faith based school, Waynesburg students have been affiliated with 2nd Sam 9 in the past because of their mission statement to help individuals “reach their fullest social, emotional, and vocational potential” through Christ according to Young.

The next service fair will be held during the spring semester. Students can reach out to  Tharp or Bonner Coordinator Grace Deep for other service options.
