Mahjong has arrived at Bowlby Library

Located on N West St. in Waynesburg sits the Eva K. Bowlby Public Library, seemingly a cornerstone for the community to not only find new options for literature or for local University students to study, but it is just as well known for their events, regularly held and otherwise. For example, the library just held their Bowlby Puzzle Challenge on Jan. 11, regular lecture series’ on topics such as the Denny House and its history, which will have another session on Jan. 22, and events such as Cosmic Bingo, which will be coming up on Jan. 31. One activity that has recently been added to their weekly calendar happens to be Mahjong.

Andrew Novak,  the individual working the Circulation Desk, spoke on  how the game became what now appears to be a staple on the calendar at Bowlby Library.

“It was a group effort. We did have an individual come forward from the community and ask if we had any Mahjong equipment available,” Novak said, while continuing to elaborate on how it became a method to teach people into a full-blown group.”” We had one set, and they said they would like to teach people how to play. That’s how it kind of started, it developed from one person wanting to teach people how to play to them inviting other people, and now we five five or six or seven people every week.”

According to the Library’s official website, (https://evakbowlby.org) the Mahjong Club meets every Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the library. Individuals can come in and possibly get a club or activity hosted by the Library that may be of their interest.

“They are more than welcome to come and speak to us at the desk or speak to our director. [Kathy McClure] The other option is to send us an inquiry email to a reference at evakbowlby.org. That’s our general inbox, and you can go on to send information there regarding what equipment you have, your idea for the project, things like that and some contact information. We will look over it and give you guys a call and see what we can do and what we can work out.”

According to the calendar on the website, the Mahjong Club is just one of the many community building activities that the library hosts. For example , the library has a Dungeons and Dragons group every Friday at 12:30 p.m. To go along with that, they have events such as  Cosmic Bingo, movie nights, book club meetings, and several lecture series held throughout the year.
