Brookman makes history in series split with Grove City

The Waynesburg University softball team split the doubleheader against Grove City on Thursday with game one finishing 1-0 and game two 5-2.

Waynesburg entered Thursday’s doubleheader against the Wolverines losing seven of their last ten games.

It was a special doubleheader as both teams had the honor to play for Suicide Awareness.

The first game was a pitcher’s duel between Grove City’s Abigail Meadows and Waynesburg’s Sydney Wilson.

Through the first two innings, neither team recorded any hits but Grove City did have a runner in scoring in the top of the first, but they could not capitalize.

Waynesburg had their opportunity in the bottom of the third to score first as Jasmine Desmaske and Wilson would reach base on back-to-back walks.

Then, two batters later Grace Higgins would lay down a bunt single which would load the bases with only one out. However, Meadows would be unfazed as she would strike out Sydney Waryanka and get Ella Brookman to ground out.

In the top and bottom of the fourth innings, Grove City and Waynesburg would once again have baserunners on, but neither scored.

However, in the bottom of the fifth, Waynesburg would be the first to score. After Kayla Gratton grounded out, Higgins would then reach on a very pivotal error by Meadows on a bunt attempt.

Then, two batters later Brookman capitalized on the extra out and hammered an RBI double into deep right field scoring Higgins snapping her 0-8 hitless skid.

Brookman would move herself into the Waynesburg history books as she is now the all-time hits leader with 153 passing her former teammate Bryn Hannah.

“I have been in my head a lot lately,” said Brookman. “It is breaking a record, and I am breaking a record of one of my good friends who broke the record last year. It was very nice to get that hit.”

Brookman also said how she feels she plays best.

“I was trying to be my best self,” said Brookman. “When I am at my best, I know I can hit the ball to be able to score my teammates whenever I need to.”

That would be all the run support that Wilson needed as she would not allow another run to score in the remaining two innings.

The second game would be a game that Waynesburg would want back as they would have a rough first inning giving up four runs on three errors.

However, Autumn Stemple would bounce back in the final six innings giving one run. The Yellow Jackets would fall to Grove City in the second game 5-2.

“I am proud of Autumn and Sydney,” said head coach Brett Shimek. “We play little better defense in the second game we would have had a better chance to win.”

Waynesburg is back in action at home on Sunday, April 21, against Saint Vincent. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
