Last week the Waynesburg University softball team started Presidents’ Athletic Conference play with a doubleheader against Westminster.
Waynesburg (5-13, 1-1) split the doubleheader, losing game one 4-1, and bouncing back to win game two, 4-2. With that victory, it was the first win over the Titans (6-10, 1-1) since April 28, 2011, which stretched to a total of 12 games without a win against Westminster.
This victory also ended a seven-game losing streak against PAC competition that dated back to last season. This also wasn’t the only history made on Thursday, as it was also head coach Brett Shimek’s first ever PAC win.
In game one, the Yellow Jackets started off by adding a run in the bottom of the second inning, but the Titans added three runs in the top of the third and one in the fourth, while holding Waynesburg scoreless the rest of the way to clinch the win.
In game one, sophomore Emma Kubalak was tagged with the loss in the circle. Before being relieved by senior Courtney Messenger, Kubalak allowed four runs on three hits and three walks. Messenger came in to relive Kubalak in the sixth, and threw two innings and added one strikeout to end the game.
In the second game, Waynesburg struggled to get things together early as Westminster scored in the top of the first. Then, Waynesburg started to get the bats rolling with back-to-back singles from junior catcher Rachel Skon and junior Ashley Dubovich, who scored the tying run. Later in the inning, senior first basemen Alex Lawrence added a third single in the inning to give the team a 2-1 lead.
Westminster made a comeback on the fifth inning scoring a run to knot things up at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Waynesburg, Pennsylvania natives Tara and Taylor Staley added a single and double, respectively. Coupled with an error by Westminster, the Staley sisters were able to reach home to put the Yellow Jackets up for good for the 4-2 win.
“We’ve done really well so far this year, despite our record,” said Dubovich. “This was a really big game for us to win and I’m glad we did, now we’ve [got to] take each game one at a time from here on out.”
The Yellow Jackets offense had a total of 11 hits through both games, eight of which came in game two and Lawrence, Skon and senior Cat Allstatt all added doubles in the win.
“I’m just glad we got this win,” said Tara Staley. “Our goal now is to continue to play well in big games and make a run at the PAC playoffs.”
Waynesburg is back in action later today when it hosts Grove City for a PAC doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will then follow that up with another PAC doubleheader against Saint Vincent this Saturday, which starts at 2 p.m. in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
