Wrestling concludes 2021-22 regular season

Head wrestling coach Ron Headlee’s final regular season has officially come to a close.

“It’s hard to believe it’s come to an end,” Headlee said.

Sunday afternoon, Waynesburg took on Averett and McDaniel at McDaniel College.

Averett is ranked No. 15 in the country as a team in Division III and proved to be a tough test, defeating Waynesburg 53-0.

The Yellow Jackets were able to pick up a few wins in the match against McDaniel but still lost the dual with a 41-12 score.

Freshman Damion Finnegan was the first Jacket to get a victory on the day with a 10-6 decision at the 141-pound weight class.

Seth Evans, another freshman, also earned a decision victory against McDaniel. Evans beat his opponent Xavier Howard in a 4-3 decision, avenging a loss to Howard earlier in the season at the Messiah tournament.

“That was a good win for [Evans],” Headlee said. “Anytime we’re wrestling someone and we’re looking to close the gap we try to get them the next time, so he did that.”

Junior heavyweight Rocky McGeary’s first-period pin was the other win for Waynesburg.

“I definitely think I’ve got some more work to do,” McGeary said. “I’m happy with my progress and I definitely think we’re getting in our postseason stride.”

“We just need to get him more offensive-minded,” Headlee said.

There is more potential good news for the wrestling team. Luke Lavanway and Dylan Winters were each back in the wrestling room for practice on Monday. Both of them missed time with injuries.

Waynesburg hosts the PAC Championships on Feb. 12 at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse beginning at 11 a.m.
